We have two new kids here on the farm, born Tuesday evening. Buck/doe twins. The buck is sold, but the doe is available. I only have this photo of her so far, but this weekend if the weather cooperates, we will try to get them out on pasture for a while and get some good photos. If you're interested in this little one or any of the other goats you see here let me know and we can talk. I love talking goats, and will work with you to get you as much information as you need, and welcome your prearranged visit to our farm as well.
I am in the process of trying to sell my little herd, and keeping only 2 does (because who can live with NO goats?? :)
I am most interested in helping someone start with goats if they're interested in my little herd as a whole. I have books, medications, milking stand, buckets, etc. available as well as knowledge to share in helping an interested party get started.
Mr. Tumnus is for sale:

Due to the fact that we want to keep Odin, the son of Mr. Tumnus and a wonderful buck kid born here this year, we are going to sell Mr, Tumnus. He's a 4 year old first generation 50/50 buck. He's nice and wide with straight, strong legs and feet and a nice level topline. He comes from good milking lines.
His sire's dam (Starlight, pictured below) was a Nigerian Dwarf who peaked at 4 pounds her second freshening. His dam was a full Nubian doe who also peaked at 4 lbs. her first freshening at 14 months old.
We have spent a lot of time with this guy, so he's friendly and loves attention. He's been very healthy and an easy keeper all his life. His kids are mostly an improvement over their parents in breed character. Here are some photos of him and his son, Odin. Please contact us by leaving a comment or via the contact button on your screen. We will get back to you and answer any questions you may have. This page is a work in progress, but we have Mr.Tumnus, his son Odin and his sire's dam Starlight pictured below.

I don't know how many years I've been looking at Green Gables' website, hoping to one day own a buck from Eliya. We're so happy to finally have him here on our farm. He is sure to add great things to the milk production, udder conformation and ears of our kids to come. We hope that by late fall, he will be ready to breed a few of our girls. It's going to be a long wait for spring next year, let me tell you! I'm still trying to figure out if the percentages I have question marks after are correct. Will update when I know.
He was such a delightful surprise for us! We haven't had this color combination yet, and his breed character is the best we've gotten as well. He was the largest kid born on our farm as well, weighing in at 7.5 pounds. He's so sweet and fun! We're enjoying him as much as we can while he's small...and clean. :) We plan to breed him to Freyja this late fall/winter. They have the same base coloring, which is my favorite; sundgau or black and tan. Odin's base color is so broken by the white that it's hard to realize it's there. He's such a flashy little guy. I hope we get some more kids with his and Freyja's coloing. I guess I'd better hope for the good conformation to pass along over the coloring though! :)

We have a busy year this year, and some changes to the does we currently own. This has lead to our choice to breed only two does to kid this season. Moon is due mid May and April is due mid June. Moon is showing evidence of having a belly full of kids already. April not so much, but I'm hoping. :) These kids will be F2 Experimental and 50/50. Please feel free to contact us if you're interested in purchasing a kid from us this season, and we'll keep you posted as to the progress of our does and the kids they have.

I finally got all of my registrations completed, and all papers sent off to new owners of our 2017 kids, and that feels pretty great too. Now all of our mininubians are registered with the Miniature Dairy Goat Association (MDGA). It's great to see a little herd of mininubians developing under our patient and thoughtful care.

We have a deposit on a Green Gables Mininubian buckling this year, so we should be able to update on who we get sometime this summer. It's very exciting! I've been looking at the Green Gables herd for years, and I'm like a kid at Christmas waiting to see him myself. If all goes well, we should have four does ready to be bred to kid for Spring 2019, at least two of them sired by our new buck. Some of the resulting kids next season will be F3, and should be American. I expect some really nice breed character with them. Some of the kids will be F2, but if their dams are bred to the new buck, I believe we should have improved breed character with more roman noses and longer, less controlled ears. It's all so exciting to think about!
We used to raise Nigjerian Dwarf goats. They are lovely little cuties with big persinality, and we still have one sweet little doe who we plan to keep for all eternity. :) However, we now raise Mini-Nubian goats. They're a little taller, which makes milking easier. They are a powerhouse animal, on average putting in the milk pail 2/3 the amount of milk that a full size Nubian doe does on 1/2 the amount of food required by a full size Nubian doe. They have crazy fun personalities, and it's super exciting (albeit a slow kind of exciting waiting game) to see the goats develop breed character over time when developing a new line. We're up to second generation, and positively looking toward a future of ears for days and awesome roman noses. Just in a smaller, more manageable package.
Goat Finder should be listing our farm under the mini-Nubian breed soon, I hope.

However, I will take care of that now. We started out the fall of 2016 with:

mini-Nubian does
April
Moon
Francine

mini-Nubian buck
Mr. Tumnus

Nigerian Dwarf Doe
Johannah

Nigerian Dwarf Buck
Trevor

Our 2017 kidding season was hugely successful in every way, and I'm super thankful to God for the wonder and amazement of it all. The kids, both goat and human, have had a blast, and so have I. :)

Francine, our lovely black and white mini-Nubian doe, kidded March 13 with buck/doe twins. I immediately fell in love with her doe kid, named her Freyja, and am keeping her here.
Next was April, who kidded on March 16 with triplets, one buck and two does. She rejected one doe kid, so we have a bottle baby. This is our first ever fully bottle fed kid, and has been quite an experience. Because she didn't need her goat mama, we got to take her to the hospital, nursing home and elementary school in our community. It was wonderful fun! She and her sister will be going to a pet home later this month. Brother will be herd sire for a lovely bunch of does and leaving this month as well.
Third was Johannah, my daughter's 4H doe. She's a precious little girl, and going to be a fine milker as well. She also had triplets, two bucks and a doe. She didn't even look pregnant, though I several times felt a hard baby body part sliding along her side, and the signs of her impending delivery were unmistakeable. She had the tiniest little triplets! Two of them were under two pounds. The third was just over. She shot them out so quickly that we couldn't get to the barn before they were all born, though we ran out there as soon as we heard her pushing on the baby monitor. I had just been out checking on her and doing the chores less than half an hour before, and there was nothing going on at all. She surprised us in every way. :)
Fourth and last, Moon kidded with triplet does! They are all so adorable. Two of them have completely white faces, and blue eyes that look like they're wearing heavy black eye liner. Those eyes! I want to keep them all! However, they'll all be for sale instead. These are sure to be some lovely family milkers. Moon is my favorite milker ever, and as a first freshener she milked for 14 months before I decided to take a break from milking and dry her off. She milked half a gallon a day for much of that lactation. I can't wait to see what this second freshening brings! These girls will hopefully have some nice individual photos added to our for sale page soon. Be sure to inquire by using our contact button or leaving a comment if you're interested.
It started out as a normal kidding, and then stalled out completely. She stopped contracting and pushing, and just lay down for a rest. It seemed she was saying, "Please just make this go away." I went in for a feel, which made her contract, but there were a number of parts that didn't match all jumbled up, and I couldn't seem to sort it. A dear friend went in with the same results. So, it was off to the vet, another dear friend and my boss as well (we'll call her K), for some help. Here's Moon with her new little buckling just after his birth.
Donald (named after K's 98 year old father, who passed away the next day) was the first baby pulled, followed by a stillborn doeling. The doeling was all broken and twisted inside the doe. So strange. I imagine she got hit by another doe some days before the birth. Because it was so tangled up, it's back end as well as it's front were presenting at the same time. Hence the confusion with all the body parts.
It's sad to have lost one, but I'm thankful Moon seems to be doing so well, and little Donald is such a friendly, quirky little guy. We're enjoying him a lot. Here are a few more pics from K's yard after Moon was all finished up. She went straight for the raspberry bushes. :) Smart girl.
I have a very mixed flock of 28 chickens. There are 3 roosters, two bantam breeds and one a bantam crossed with a full sized hen. The hen was either a black star or a Columbian Wyandotte. Of the 25 hens, 3 are Dominique's, 3 Golden Penciled Hamburg's, 1 Columbian Wyandotte, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Black Star, and 16 various bantams.
It seems an odd mix, and one that is not entirely efficient at any job. True, that. However, they are a part of a long term goal of generating a flock that is self perpetuating without incubating eggs or buying new laying hens. I'm essentially trying to go back in time to a day when hens sat eggs and perpetuated their kind without a lot of fuss and bother, but also have a flock of laying hens that will lay reasonably well without constant broodiness.
Right now, I have all the broodiness I can handle with these bantam hens of mine. The original 7 bantam hens were hatched by broody hens themselves. In turn, most if not all of them hatched eggs last summer. Currently I have 4 broody hens, some of them hatched last year, sitting on full size hens eggs in my nest boxes. The full sized hens eggs were fertilized by either a bantam or bantam cross rooster.
What I'm hoping for now is to get some hens that are full size/bantam crosses that might have a bit more egg laying desire with a bit less broody behavior, and a larger egg size.

Here's the current flock:

Pretty rainbow, are they not?

When a hen goes broody and starts setting in a nest box, I move her to a small cage with a nest box, food and water that is partially covered with a sheet. I do it at dusk, when she's drowsy and likely to stay where we put her without getting too shook up about it, as quickly as I can and put her right back down on her warm eggs. Tonight, I will move four hens in this way.

Waiting cages, needing food and water containers added:

We used this process around 7 or 8 times last summer. It worked perfectly every time. These bantam hens are broody to a fault. I'm pretty sure that some of them would die of malnourishment if they weren't allowed to set eggs and hatch a brood. They will literally sit on nothing if you take the eggs away, and never move from their post. Sometimes I have to make them get off of their eggs to eat, drink and of course poop. :) I don't actually remove the hen from the nest. I just uncover the cage and a lot of times that makes her decide to get off of her nest to eat. I can tell if they've gotten off to eat by seeing if there's any fresh poop. A broody hen poops one very large, stinky pile of poo each day when she gets off her nest for a quick drink and bite to eat.

Here are a few of the broody gals:

I leave them in the cage, removing the nest box after all have hatched, until they're a couple of weeks old. If there are eggs left after 24 to 48 hours and the hen is still sitting, I remove them with the nest box. I do make sure there's no live chick inside before getting rid of them. So far, there never have been.

Here's the result of around a 21 day wait. These are from last summer:

I love letting the hens hatch the eggs and care for the chicks. They do it so well, of course! :) No pasty butts to worry about. No heat lamps needed. The chicks are hardy and happy, and so much fun to watch as mom teaches them to eat and drink, scratch up seeds and insects, and perch on a perch. They're so young when they manage to fly up with mom. It's really the sweetest, most natural thing.
After a few weeks the chicks and their mom go into the coop with the other chickens:
Ginger was bred on March 1 to Shamrock, so now we have two does due in July (hopefully). We'll breed the other two girls in the fall, so now they're on opposite schedules and we should have milk for more of the year. I hope it works out that way, anyway.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8237854660949771239.post-72215702032871410012015-01-30T07:32:00.003-08:002015-01-30T20:35:48.255-08:00Winter Update Part 2The short of it is, I've reduced my herd, or two herds, really, down so far that I'm very low on breeding possibilities. I retained only two ND does and one ND buck, and two mini-Nubian does and one mini-Nubian buck.

When I decided to sell both of my Nubian does, I hadn't researched the process of creating a line of mini-Nubians to the fullest yet. I'm still getting a handle on that process, and realizing that it would take a lot of time and a lot of good goats to develop my own line from scratch. Yes, I can breed my does and buck for 50/50, second generation mini-Nubians. Yes, they will be some really nice, mini sized goats, and they should be rather milky with nice udders and teats. But they won't have any more breed character than my current mini-Nubians. I need more Nubian in the line first.

I'm also not ready to leave the Nigerians behind. I love the little darlings who give so much in terms of loving personality, rich and creamy milk, and even some meat for our table. All on so little space and so little food! I can't fault them for much, unless it is their short stature and smaller teat size. It is hard to get a pail under them.

SO...

Right now I have a loose plan for moving ahead. I would like to keep the Nigerians that I have until they grow old and pass away; at least the does. I will be breeding the mini-Nubians I have now for milking, and selling the doelings they produce. I expect them to be quality, and worth investing in. They just won't have the roman nose and floppy ears of the Nubian. At most I suppose they'll have airplane ears and straight noses, like their mothers and father. I hope in a while to get a 5th or 6th generation mini-Nubian buck who has great breed character, and breed him to my current does, and perhaps a daughter or two. It will be years down the road when I can say I am producing doelings with the character I'm hoping for.

This has all been a huge learning experience, and I'm not sure that with the relatively small resources I have as far as land and $, that I've made a "wise" decision as far as breeding mini-Nubians.

However, I think I have made a wise decision about the goats I've kept for my homestead. These first generation mini-Nubians of mine are feeling like a perfect fit here. They're just what we need. Great size, great personality, don't seem to eat any more than the ND's so far. I'm really pretty sure their udder and teat size is going to be really nice for hand milking, and they are tall enough to get a bucket under with ease. I'm really looking forward to freshening them, and I don't think I'm going to be disappointed.

All that said, I still don't know exactly where I'm headed in the future, but I like where I am right now.

For that I apologize. I really love it when I can go to a website, blog or Facebook business page and see up to date activity.

The main reason for my long absence is that in order to share what's been going with our little farm, and the decisions we've made in the past 6 months, I have to think about and share some hard things. It has been hard to find the time of energy to do that, but I feel up to the task today. :)

In early August, my sister in law was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. It had spread to much of her organs and lymph system. Soon after that, for a variety of reasons, she and my brother's three children came to live with us for an unknown period of time. We were suddenly very busy with the farm, milking, homeschooling our own four children, and loving three more sweet ones. We suddenly had children aged 16, 14, 11, and 9, with an added 4 year old and set of nine month old twins. All the changes and the added emotional challenges for everyone involved ...well, you can imagine. After about three weeks, I dried off my does early. At the end of October we had decreased our herd to 6 goats total. We now have the four does below and two bucks.

The great news is that my SIL is doing WONDERFULLY! She has been able to have the children at home with her since mid December, and she seems to be holding up fine and is very glad to have her family all together. She had two chemo treatments, after which the docs didn't hold out much hope for her. She decided to fore go the conventional treatment options and try lots of prayer, a product called Protocel, as well as some very careful diet choices and exercise It seems to be working, as she continues to feel and look better and better all the time. You can learn more about Protocel with an online search or in the book, Outsmart Your Cancer by Tanya Harter Pierce, should you be interested.

Because of the many unknowns in the future, we have decided to hold off breeding any of our goats this winter, and see how thing play out. We may breed one or two does this spring if all seems stable, if any of them go into spring heats for us.

Also putting me at a bit of a stand-still are the breeding choices I've left myself with because of who I chose to keep and who I let go when cutting my herd back. I'll try to post a bit about that in the near future.

Suffice it to say, I am missing two human babies and a sweet little girl who have gone back to their own wonderful parents, as well as missing the excitement of having a new crop of spring kids to look forward to, and all that delicious fresh goat milk. How forlorn it occasionally feels! I'm off to hug my own human children, and see if I can talk the younger ones into a snuggle and some read aloud time. Heaven knows I'll have to wrestle the oldest two just to get that hug, let alone snuggling up for a story!

She's on day 146 today, and big as a house. I'm guessing quads. She's had triplets both previous freshenings. Her udder has a way to go and her ligs aren't gone, so I don't think it will be today, but I sure hope they come soon.
birthing pads (in yesterday's post)
lots of towels for drying little ones
tamed iodine
dixie cups for cord dipping
surgical gloves
ky jelly
preparation H
hair dryer
heating pad
nasal aspirator
kid puller
CMPK drench
molasses (unsulphured)
baby monitor

What I do during a normal birth:
When a doe is near her kidding time, I hook up the baby monitor in the barn so I can hear what's going on out there. As her time gets nearer and I see that her tail ligaments are very loose, her babies have dropped lower and her sides look hollow, and her udder and teats are full of milk, I keep my ear tuned in to that monitor. I also move her to a kidding pen. I listen for restlessness in the doe and her talking baby talk to her unborn babies. Most of the time if it's the middle of the night the first thing I hear is the doe scream as the first kid is being born, then hopefully the sound of the baby's first bleat. I jump into my clothes and head for the barn with a thermos of hot water with a little molasses in it.
If I have some warning that she's in labor, I am in the barn with her watching her and keeping her company. I will get a towel or pad of some kind ready to receive the first kid. If the cord doesn't break on its own, I will tear it a few inches from the kids navel. I help mama dry the baby or babies, then dip the cords in a dixi cup full of tamed iodine making sure to get that area of the belly fully covered with the iodine. I'm not convinced this actually does any good, as the doe usually cleans it all back off right away, but I feel better knowing I did the best I could to prevent infection. If it's very cold, I use the heating pad to keep babies on while drying them with the hair dryer. This can take a long time in very cold weather, but is of utmost importance. Pay close attention to ears, tails and hooves. They can freeze quickly.
If the kid is having any trouble clearing the fluid from it's lungs, I will place it's behind higher than it's head and use the nasal aspirator to suction out the mouth and nose. If that's not enough, I swing the baby in an arc between my legs, head down. If you ever have to do that, make sure you have a firm hold on the kid and support it's head and neck. Wrapping the kid in a towel will help you to keep a firm hold. I have had to do this in a breech birth with very postiive results.
I then make sure everyone gets to nurse a couple of times, wait for the placenta to pass, and clean up the stall. I also give the doe some warm water with molasses in it as a treat and some needed energy. I offer her a little grain and alfalfa (either baled or chaffhaye) as well. Don't overdo it on the molasses, grain or alfalfa, as your doe could end up with very soft stools, or bloat.
If it's the middle of the night, I go back to bed. If it's day time, usually I can't resist just sitting in the corner and watching the new little family. :)
I think that's about it. The things on this list that I haven't mentioned are rarely used. They're for emergencies only, and right now I've decided to focus on a "normal" birth. Perhaps I'll get to those in future. If anyone reading this has any questions about anything, birthing or otherwise, please contact me using my contact button, or pm me using my North Forest Farm FB page, or leave a comment, and I'll try to answer your questions. It will give me some really good ideas on things to blog about as well.
Don't know how consistent I'll be, but I might as well give it a try. Here goes...

I was about to break down and buy some puppy pee pads to use for goat births, because it's hard picking all the bits of membrane and straw off of a towel before washing, and I need a lot of towels this year. Also, I wanted something to soak up the majority of the fluid before it could hit the bedding, making less clean up of the birthing stall. I really hate using disposable stuff though. When I mentioned it to hubby he also balked at the idea, so I started to think about an alternative. I came up with these.

I used a vinyl table cloth, some quilt batting and a jersey cotton sheet. I should get a chance to see how it works within a few days, as Starlight is almost ready to kid. She seems to have a lot of them on the way. I'm guessing quads since she's had triplets both of her previous freshenings, and she looks so much bigger this time, so I made four of these pads yesterday. Hopefully that's all I need! I also hope they work well and at least begin to solve the problem they're intended for.
I also saw in a previous post that I had promised to share what I keep in my birthing kit. Hopefully soon I'll actually do that. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8237854660949771239.post-72039920956088529802014-04-23T14:57:00.001-07:002014-04-23T14:57:26.052-07:00Our First Mini-Nubians Are Here!!!!!French's Dream Twisted Sister X North Forest Farm MX Shamrock
The first one was born at about 2:30 A.M. I heard her scream over the baby monitor, then baby number one bleat her first little bleat. Within a minute or two I was in the barn and drying her off, plugging in the heating pad and using the hair dryer. It was such a cold night, about -15 degrees F, I later found out. It took about three hours to get everyone dry and warm, and settled in. I was still a bit concerned about mama Ginger when I left the barn, but I had to get some rest and warm up myself. Two and a half hours later I was back in the barn doing the morning chores, and all was well.
These are the friendliest kids we've ever had, and I'm enjoying them so much. It will be hard to see them go when it's time. However, they'll be ready to go around the end of May, and go they must.
Here they are! Cute, right!?!
Or I should say in heat for real, I assume. This is the first time I've had false heats happen, but I've heard of it so I wasn't completely surprised. Apparently, some does have a false heat about 5 days before the real thing. Both of these does appeared to be in heat on October 11th, and again on October 17th. Hopefully now they are bred, and due around March 11.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8237854660949771239.post-51452540692257760882013-10-11T11:39:00.001-07:002013-10-18T13:18:20.213-07:00Waiting for Kids AgainBreeding has begun for spring 2014 kids!
